Your car’s radiator helps to control the temperature in your engine, keeping it at a safe working temperature. When your engine climbs, liquid coolant is released into the system to absorb the heat. Heated coolant flows into the radiator where airflow from the radiator grille passes over the tubes in the radiator filled with coolant and reduces their temperature. Damaged Engine Fan
When the hot coolant reaches your radiator, it flows into a series of thin tubes. As your car moves, air flows through the radiator grille and speed and this movement reduce the coolant’s temperature. The faster your car travels, the quicker the coolant’s temperature will drop. This works perfectly when your car is moving, but when you are stationary and your engine is idling, airflow through the grille is very low.
To prevent your engine from overheating in traffic, your engine has a fan just behind the radiator. When your car is idling and the temperature starts to rise, the radiator fan switches on and blows over the tubes, and pushes the hot air out of the engine. If you see that your engine temperature is steady when you driving, but it starts to climb rapidly when you idle, you may have a damaged fan.
Damaged Radiator Hoses
Two thick hoses connect your radiator to the rest of your engine’s cooling system. These hoses are tough, but as they continually carry hot coolant under pressure, in time they can suffer damage. The top radiator hose is more prone to damage as it always carries hot coolant, whilst the bottom radiator hose removes coolant that’s already been cooled. The heat from your engine and the hot coolant can cause a hose to dry out and become brittle, and a brittle hose can spring a leak.
If a radiator hose starts to leak, your engine will start to lose coolant. The cooling system is pressurized, and the more coolant you lose the lower the pressure will drop. Loss of coolant and low pressure in the system will cause your engine temperature to climb rapidly. Our technicians can examine the hoses, and replace them if they are worn or leaking.
Damaged Water Pump
The water pump’s job is to pump coolant through the cooling system when your engine temperature gets too high. If you have a worn or damaged pump, the coolant won’t flow and your engine temperature will rise. We can check the water pump, and if it’s damaged we can easily replace it.
