Upgraded Safety Standards & Achievements

The IIHS has upgraded the 2024 Ioniq 5 from a Top Safety Pick to a Top Safety Pick+ after it met new, more stringent safety standards. The Ioniq 5 made notable advancements in rear occupant safety, satisfying the tough criteria of the Offset Deformable Barrier (ODB 2.0) evaluation. These improvements in safety features and build quality have earned the Ioniq 5 the highest safety rating available.

Our celebration continues as the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2024 Hyundai Sonata have been honored with the Top Safety Pick designation. These awards underscore Hyundai’s unwavering commitment to vehicle safety, demonstrating that both new releases and established models adhere to the high standards set by the IIHS.

Hyundai’s Commitment to Safety

Cole Stutz, Chief Safety Officer of Hyundai Motor North America, expressed pride in the company’s achievements. “As Hyundai continues to sustain leadership in the IIHS TSP award designations, we are proud to have two additional products awarded, including the new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe mid-size SUV and new 2024 Hyundai Sonata sedan. At Hyundai, we are committed to providing safe vehicles to protect customers and other vulnerable road users.”

Hyundai’s Enhanced Safety Features

To meet the IIHS’s challenge for more rigorous testing, Hyundai made key upgrades, such as an enhanced side structure, improved seat belts for rear occupants, and integration of SmartSense safety features. To address the new standards, Hyundai made Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Driver Assist Warnings standard features across all models.

Hyundai’s Enhanced Safety Features include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Driver Assist Warnings
  • Enhanced side structure
  • Advanced seat belts for rear seat occupants

IIHS Top Safety Pick Importance

When it comes to the IIHS Top Safety Pick evaluation, the focus is on keeping people safe and preventing road fatalities. To qualify for a Top Safety Pick, a car needs to score well in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. For the Top Safety Pick+ award, vehicles must get good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests and at least an acceptable rating in the updated moderate front crash test. On top of that, both awards require acceptable or good ratings for pedestrian crash prevention and headlights across all trim levels.

With nine IIHS Top Safety Pick awards for 2024, Hyundai has highlighted its leadership in vehicle safety. This recognition reflects the company’s dedication to advancing safety features and meeting tough testing standards, ensuring that Hyundai vehicles deliver superior protection for drivers and contribute to safer roads.
